A work shift refers to a period of time during which an employee works.
What Are the Different Types of Work Shifts?
There are several different types of shifts, such as:
- Day shifts
- Night shifts
- Evening shifts
- Weekend shifts
Some scheduling software, such as Agendrix, also offers special-purpose shifts, such as training shifts. These enable, among other things, managers to better track the professional development of their employees and add documents for employees to consult during their training.
What Is the Minimum Duration of a Work Shift?
In practice in Canada, the minimum work shift is three hours. A person required to work for less than three hours is deemed to have worked at least three hours and, therefore, will be paid for three hours’ work regardless of the actual length of the shift. This is called attendance allowance.
